Ways to get cheap car insurance – even with teen drivers in household.
Kim Darby : Do insurance companies force you to add teens on the policy even though I am not allowing my teenager to drive the car?
Car insurance companies and insurance
Insurance companies and insurance regulations have been misunderstood and mis- interpreted through the ages. The blame is both ways, and mostly because insurance policies, applications are really boring and seem to be a real drag. Let us for once discuss this from a point of view of both sides which will help each one to appreciate the logic and thinking or understand the why, which would make the implementation easy.
Teen driver needs to be included on auto policy
Yes, the insurance company would ask you to add all drivers who are licensed and who are staying with you as family members to be added on the car. This would mean that the insurance company does expect you to add your teenager if he or she is licensed on the car. This is what is expected in almost all States and also in other parts of the world.
The reason behind this logic is that any person who is licensed to drive a car would be driving the car at some point or the other and it would be difficult for anyone to specifically provide information of how many times, how many miles a particular driver is riding the vehicle, hence all are considered to be drivers of the vehicle.
You need to also keep in mind that the insurance company would rate the car insurance based on the highest risk of the driver. Lets understand this with an example. Supposing in my household I am there with my wife, if I have a drunken driving record or a bad driving record, the insurance company would rate the car insurance based on my rating. Likewise your rating would be based on the additional exposure of your teen. Teenage or young drivers or new drivers car insurance rates are higher and hence you would be charged a higher premium.
Getting cheap car insurance even if you have a teen driver in household
You can still get a cheaper car insurance, if you so desire and this can be done by adding a “ Named driver exclusion” to your car insurance policy. Here you are acknowledging the fact that you have a teen driver, but specifically asking the insurance company to exclude the driver from insurance coverage. The insurance company would not charge you a higher rate in this case. However, you need to remember that if your teen drivers your vehicle and meets with an accident the insurance company would deny the claim. You would be left to bear the cost of the entire claim and besides the other issue of your teen driving the car when he is not insured.
If you so desire, ask the insurance company to exclude your teen from the insurance and you would get cheaper car insurance rates. Of course, if you try our option here of comparing car insurance, you would be rewarded with cheap car insurance quotes.
