Teen auto insurance – Is the teenager a principal driver on auto insurance policy?

Andy Jekings: I am adding my daughter to my auto insurance policy, and she’ll be taking one of my cars with her to college. Does this mean that she’ll be considered the principal driver on the policy?

Response: Andy, you are missing the correct question behind this, what you really want to know is if your daughter is a principal driver than how would the insurance companies rate the policy or what will my auto insurance premium be.

Now let me explain this properly to you. If your daughter is borrowing your car to take with her to college, she must be listed as either a principal driver or an occasional driver on your insurance policy. Secondly, it would be important if the car is in the name of your daughter than she would be a principal driver. Most insurance companies will consider someone as the principal driver on the policy if he or she:

Is the registered owner of the vehicle,

Drives the vehicle to work or school, or

Drives the vehicle more than anyone else.

Check with your insurance company to see if you should list your son as a principal driver, and if so, how your insurance coverage and premiums will be affected.

If your daughter is listed as a principal driver than the auto insurance premium would be higher. If your daughter is using the car less and you are the principal driver than the insurance premium would be much lesser.

However, teen auto insurance premium for girls is much less expensive than the boys auto insurance premium. I’m 16 years old i was driving to a friends house when i lost control of my 2000 chevy blazer, I hit a tree doing about 55 I shattered my kneecap into 8 pieces and I was unable to walk for two months, i live in Jacksonville florida. 7 cars drove by while I laid bleeding on the side of the road one person finally stopped as I had given up. No, Rocky I am afraid this is not correct. In most US States, cars cannot be parked on public roads without complying with car insurance laws. The car will be tower away or you would be given a violation ticket which will result in a fee. Be aware that a simple license plate check from authorities may reveal an uninsured vehicle.
If your vehicle is not in use and uninsured, than you can park is. This is called non operational vehicle, or sometimes in short called ‘non-op’ this is how this vehicle will be registered. If you file your vehicle under this status than the use of the car will be prohibited, but you can park the vehicle officially without problem. When you want to start using the vehicle you must notify and get the status changed to operational and buy auto insurance of comply by all financial responsibility
