Luling : Authorities say three Hahnville High School students in Luling, La., remain hospitalized from a wreck when a driver lost control while allegedly texting on her cell phone.
St. Charles Parish sheriff’s deputies tell The Times-Picayune that one boy was sitting on a curb, one standing on the curb and another standing nearby in the street when they were hit Saturday evening in Luling.
They are identified as 15-year-old Joseph Kirch, 17-year-old Treval Dunmiles and 17-year-old Joseph Rafiel, all of Luling.
Authorities say 42-year-old Stephanie L. Clay of Luling was booked with texting while driving, reckless driving and three counts of negligent injuring.

This is a message which I got on my email and was asked to pass around. I feel strongly on teen safety and youth safety and this is one main reason, I write and write so that some one somewhere benefits….my way of contributing. “The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately 85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The rider’s reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident.

The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.

“Compared with teens whose parents were uninvolved, kids who said their parents set clear rules and monitored their whereabouts without being overly controlling had half as many crashes and much better driving habits.

These teens were 71 percent less likely to drive while drunk and 30 percent less likely to use a cell phone while driving than kids with uninvolved parents.

Dr. Niranjan Karnik, a University of Chicago specialist in adolescent mental health, said the research underscores the importance of appropriate parenting and widely enacted graduated licensing laws for teens.

Debby Hendricks of Hatfield, Pa. made her daughters wait until age 17 to get their licenses, and gave them lots of driving practice beforehand.

The girls, aged 17 and 19, also share a family car, and can’t “just grab the keys and leave” without saying where they’re going and with whom, Hendricks said.

So far so good — neither girl has been in an accident, although the younger one, Leslie, has only had her license for a few months.

Leslie considers herself a safe driver, but adds, “I probably do underestimate the risks.”
