Jake Pavelka : What are the changes in teen driving regulations? Will this help in getting cheap car insurance for the young driver?

Teen driving changes and cheap auto insurance

Response : As on 23rd February 2010, a New York law has been brought into effect . The main objective of this is to strenghten the state’s existing graduated driver license (GDL) system for teenagers, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

As per this there is a a teen driver or young driver under 21 years can have only one non-family member in the car.

Secondly they need to have 50 hours of supervised driving instead of 20 hours before the teenager can take a road test.

Third, out of 50 hours of training the young driver must have 15 hours after sunset.

Graduate Driving License is a three-phase program that gives teen drivers an opportunity to develop more mature driving attitudes and gain experience behind the wheel over a period of time. Florida became the first state to enact a GDL law in 1996, and GDL legislation has been credited with reducing the number of motor vehicle accidents involving teenaged drivers in that state and elsewhere.

Nonetheless, motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of death among 15- to 20-year-olds and insurance industry research shows that more than half of teens who die in crashes are passengers, many of whom are not wearing a seatbelt. In addition, the data indicates that a teen driver’s chance of getting into a fatal accident doubles when a teen passenger is in the car. With three or more passengers, the risk quadruples.

“Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to high crash rates among teens,” said Barry. “Even the best teenage drivers don’t have the judgment that comes with experience. It affects their recognition of and response to hazardous situations and results in dangerous practices such as speeding and tailgating. Teens also tend to engage in riskier behavior—eating, talking on their cellphones and text messaging. The added distraction of another teen passenger in the car just adds to the risks facing young drivers.”

If you are parents than there are ways that you can get cheap car insurance quotes for your teen and young driver. The key is to keep your teen safe which is your first goal and than comes getting cheap car insurance. For this you need to :
1. Give confidence and support to your teenager so that he or she is encouraged to build up excellent road habits.
2. Ensure that they complete their graducated driving schools so that they know the safety rules of driving. The more driving practice your teen gets, the more confident he or she will be behind the wheel and the better able to react to challenging situations on the road.
3. Some insurers offer “safe driver” programs. Teen participants in these programs sign parent-teen driving contracts which outline the young driver’s responsibilities and the consequences of failure to meet those expectations. Check whether your insurance company has such a program—if your teenager completes the program, you may be eligible for a discount.
4. Pick up a safe car : I know that in this time and age this is a big deal since big names like Toyota and General Motors are also having issues, however, you can still pick up a car which is safe as per the safe cars given by the Insurance Information Institute.
5. In addition, insurance companies are helping to reduce the number of accidents involving teen drivers by subsidizing the cost of electronic devices, such as GPS systems and video cameras, which can monitor the way teens drive. These monitoring services are usually operated by independent companies and alert parents of unsafe driving by email, text message or phone. Some insurers now offer discounts for parents and teens who participate in these safe driving programs.
6. Talk to your teen about the dangers of drinking and driving and distracted driving.
Alcohol and driving do not mix. Parents should impose a no tolerance policy when it comes to alcohol and driving.

Once you teach your teenager the safety rules cheap car insurance will automotaically follow them.

Thanks.

Keira: I am a teen and want to know why the teen auto accident crash involvement is so high? Secondly, how do crashes involving teenagers differ from other drivers?

Response: Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the main reasons. Compared with older drivers, teenagers as a group are more willing to take risks and less likely to use safety belts. They also are more likely than older drivers to underestimate the dangers associated with hazardous situations and less able to cope with such dangers.

Teenagers not only have higher crash rates than other age groups, but they also have crashes that are different. Analyses of fatal crash data indicate that teenage drivers are more likely to be at fault in their crashes. Teenagers’ crashes and violations are more likely to involve speeding than those of older drivers, and teenagers are more likely than drivers of other ages to be in single-vehicle fatal crashes. Plus, teenagers do more of their driving in small and older cars3 and at night, compared with adults. In 2003, 42 percent of teenagers’ fatalities occurred between 9 pm and 6 am, and 54 percent occurred on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

And for 16 year-olds, all these problems are heightened. The combination of inexperience behind the wheel and immaturity produces a pattern of fatal crashes among 16 year-olds that includes the highest percentage of crashes involving speeding, the highest percentage of single-vehicle crashes, and the highest percentage of crashes with driver error. This is why the insurance companies rate this group very high for auto insurance rates. However, taking the tips and driving lessons you can have cheap auto insurance quotes.

Drive safely and carefully to save auto insurances.

Brandon : I am a teenaged boy and I am very anxious for my son and the increase in car insurance premiums since the teenager’s premium is high. What should I do to get cheap car insurance rate?

Teen auto insurance quote

Response : Your apprehension and worry for a young driver are not unfounded on the grounds of injury and high premiums. Facts prove that both this are true – teens are prone to accidents and also the  parents’ insurance policy can raise car insurance rates 50 to 100 percent with inclusion of a teenaged driver.

The fact that you have realized this and are willing  to go the extra mile will help you minimize the financial impact, keeping the teen auto insurance quotes low and also be safe. Here are a few clues:

  • Tying safety belt – to ensure protection.
  • Keeping the number of auto passengers to minimum. Multiple passengers increase the risk for accidents by three to five times and liability is high in case of accidents.
  • Speeding should be avoided at all cost. Speeding is the one of the main cause for teen accidents.
  • Avoid driving when drunk, under influence of drugs or intoxicated.
  • Talking on phone or sending messages when one is driving needs to be stopped.
  • If you know that your friend is a reckless driver avoiding rides with him and speaking up would help reduce the risk.

If teenagers can weigh risk, are mature and good at judgments they can prevent accidents and save on premiums. Follow the rules, drive with care and keep your insurance premium low.
