Melanie Benson Strick icon biggrin Do I need student auto insurance from my college state or home state? o I need student auto insurance from my college state or home state? I reside in New York but am attending college in Illionos.

Student car insurance :
Response : As per the vehicle registration, the student car insurance will have to be taken in the state in which your vehicle is registered, which will be New York in your case. Now, if you are the owner of the vehicle, than you can change the registration to your college state- Illnos, if you so desire and take the student car insurance from Illionos.
If you decide not to re-register your vehicle in the state of your college, you will need insurance from you home state. However keep the following points in mind :
1) You will have to inform your auto insurance company that you would be using the vehicle in another state and they would charge accordingly, if they want.
2) You should also opt for limits of liability which are applicable to your college state since, this would be the requirement when the vehicle is used in that particular state.

You should consider these factors in determining your auto insurance needs while you are in college:
Required Coverage

If you are attending school in another state, check with your insurance company or agent to make sure you have enough coverage to comply with any minimum insurance requirements in that state. If you get caught driving without auto insurance , you face a fine and suspension of your license plates. Illinois law requires all motor vehicle owners to have the following coverage:

Liability insurance – Pays for bodily injury to another person or property damage you cause due to the negligent operation of a vehicle. Required amounts are; $20,000 per person, $40,000 per occurrence, and $15,000 for property damage. If affordable, higher liability limits of at least 100/300/100 are better.

Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UM) – Pays for your bodily injury caused by a hit-and-run driver or an at-fault driver who has no liability insurance. Required amounts are $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident. If affordable, higher limits are available.

Note: If you purchase larger amounts of UM coverage, underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage (UIM) is also required.
Other Coverage

Medical payments – Covers medical and funeral expenses for you or your passengers if injured or killed in an accident in your vehicle. It also covers you and your family members if struck by a vehicle while walking or riding in another vehicle. This coverage pays even if you cause the accident.

Physical damage – Pays for damage to your auto. You may have to pay for part of the loss, called a deductible. Illinois law doesn’t require physical damage coverage, but your lender may. Depending on the value of your car, you may decide the cost of physical damage coverage is not worth the additional premium.

Vehicle Ownership

If your parents own the vehicle – If your parent or guardian’s name is on the title of the vehicle, you can be listed under their auto insurance policy as an additional driver, but their premium will be higher.

Brett : How do I insure my teenage driver obtaining cheap auto insurance and ensure safety of my teenager?

Response : Yes safe auto driving would definetly give you a low safe auto insurance and also ensure the safety of your child. As soon as your teenager begins to drive, notify your insurance agent that there will be an additional driver in the house. Since teenagers are inexperienced drivers, they tend to get into a lot of accidents. This will, unfortunately, be reflected in higher insurance rates. If you have a daughter, you can expect your insurance to go up as much as 50 percent. A son will increase your car insurance by as much as 100 percent. Consider also raising liability limits or buying an umbrella liability policy for additional protection.
Secondly, pick up a safe car. The type of car a young person drives can dramatically affect the price of insurance. You and your teenager should choose a car that is easy to drive and would offer protection in the event of a crash. You should avoid small cars and those with high performance images that might encourage speed and recklessness. Trucks and SUVs should also be avoided, since they are more prone to rollovers. For more information, see Teenagers & Safe Cars

Third and most important, talk to them about safe driving.Driving safely will not only keep your son or daughter alive and healthy, it will also save money. As your teenager gets older, insurance rates will drop–providing he or she has a good driving record. Talk to your teen about the dangers of combining driving with alcohol, lack of sleep and distractions.

Last but not least enroll them in a graduate driving school or institute these lessons yourself so that the teenager learns of safe auto driving and also ensures his own safety as well as those around him.

Lisa: Tampa (Florida ) : My roommate had borrowed my car with my permission and she meet with an accident? What will happen will my car insurance premium increase? I do have full coverage on my car.

Response : Lisa, please do not panic. It is good that you have full coverage on your vehicle. Your auto insurance policy insures your vehicle, plus you, your relatives and anyone else you give permission to use your car.
If both of you have auto insurance, your insurance company will cover all but your deductible.
On the other hand, if your friend or family member causes an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and property damage, that friend’s or family member’s policy will cover the bodily injury liability, and your policy will cover the property damage caused by your car. As the car’s owner, your liability insurance also covers the cost of your legal fees in the event you are sued. However, if your liability limits are exceeded, the courts can appropriate funds from your home or other personal assets in order to recover the cost of damages. Liability coverage will not pay for damages beyond the limit for which you are insured.

If you lend your car to someone who does not have insurance, however, you are inviting trouble. If the damage your friend causes exceeds your insurance policy limits, the injured party can sue you for medical and property damage expenses.

Your car insurance premium will increase and you so please review car insurance.
All the best.

Rick :  I am 17 years old what is the best type of car insurance to be got in Florida?

Florida’s minimum coverage is $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) as long as you have a valid Florida tag.

The Bodily Injury Liability is a coverage that would pay for serious and permanent injury or death to others caused by an accident of your auto. Your insurer will pay for the injuries caused in case you are sued up to the limits of your policy. Your insurance company will also pay incase you or any member of your family or any person was driving the car, provided the person had the permission to drive the car and the person is holding a valid license.  This coverage also provides you with legal defense in the event you are sued by the injured party.

I would recommend that you should go for limits higher than this, since you are a teenager and if you can afford this, since the accident rate for teenagers is highest for this group. Not having sufficient liability limits can lead to grave financial consequences.
