Melanie Benson Strick icon biggrin Do I need student auto insurance from my college state or home state? o I need student auto insurance from my college state or home state? I reside in New York but am attending college in Illionos.

Student car insurance :
Response : As per the vehicle registration, the student car insurance will have to be taken in the state in which your vehicle is registered, which will be New York in your case. Now, if you are the owner of the vehicle, than you can change the registration to your college state- Illnos, if you so desire and take the student car insurance from Illionos.
If you decide not to re-register your vehicle in the state of your college, you will need insurance from you home state. However keep the following points in mind :
1) You will have to inform your auto insurance company that you would be using the vehicle in another state and they would charge accordingly, if they want.
2) You should also opt for limits of liability which are applicable to your college state since, this would be the requirement when the vehicle is used in that particular state.

You should consider these factors in determining your auto insurance needs while you are in college:
Required Coverage

If you are attending school in another state, check with your insurance company or agent to make sure you have enough coverage to comply with any minimum insurance requirements in that state. If you get caught driving without auto insurance , you face a fine and suspension of your license plates. Illinois law requires all motor vehicle owners to have the following coverage:

Liability insurance – Pays for bodily injury to another person or property damage you cause due to the negligent operation of a vehicle. Required amounts are; $20,000 per person, $40,000 per occurrence, and $15,000 for property damage. If affordable, higher liability limits of at least 100/300/100 are better.

Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UM) – Pays for your bodily injury caused by a hit-and-run driver or an at-fault driver who has no liability insurance. Required amounts are $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident. If affordable, higher limits are available.

Note: If you purchase larger amounts of UM coverage, underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage (UIM) is also required.
Other Coverage

Medical payments – Covers medical and funeral expenses for you or your passengers if injured or killed in an accident in your vehicle. It also covers you and your family members if struck by a vehicle while walking or riding in another vehicle. This coverage pays even if you cause the accident.

Physical damage – Pays for damage to your auto. You may have to pay for part of the loss, called a deductible. Illinois law doesn’t require physical damage coverage, but your lender may. Depending on the value of your car, you may decide the cost of physical damage coverage is not worth the additional premium.

Vehicle Ownership

If your parents own the vehicle – If your parent or guardian’s name is on the title of the vehicle, you can be listed under their auto insurance policy as an additional driver, but their premium will be higher.

Kim Roach: I am a college student and looking for the best car insurance rates? Is it okay if I do not opt for certain coverages like uninsured driver auto insurance? What happens when you get into an accident with a driver who has no auto insurance coverage? Will I get this benefit even if I do not have uninsured drivers coverage?
Response :As a college studnet I understand the need to having very cheap auto insurance rates and still wanting the best auto insurance coverages. Let me inform you that presently in the USA one driver out of every six driver is uninsured. Hence presently, this is one of the compelling reasons why you need to have auto insurance coverage and besides this you need an uninsured driver or underinsured drivers coverage. The main reason for insurance is to help you not getting into financial problems. If you do not have the best car insurance coverages than the very purpose of auto insurance would be defeated when something unwanted happens.
The underinsured or uninsured drivers car insurance coverage is not mandatory in all states of the USA. It is a coverage which is priced very low and hence it is safer to have it than not have it at this juncture when there is a large amount of people who are driving the highways and by ways of USA without insurance. .
Here are a scenario about what happens when an insured driver collides with an uninsured or underinsured driver:
• Uninsured driver – If your car collides with an uninsured driver and he or she is at fault, than your uninsured drivers coverage will pay for the repairs of your car and also any injury that you or any passengers in your car sustain. The only part is that your insurance company should conclude that you were not at fault. This is not so much of a problem since the traffic rules and deciding who is at fault is already laid down as per the traffic guidelines and the insurance regulations which the insurance companies have to abide to. You will need to get as much information from the driver and relay it to your insurance company. Depending on who is at fault and what was damaged, your insurance company will reimburse the damage to your car but probably at the expense of your premiums. The main thing to focus here is that this would not be considered a claim under your policy for underwriting purpose and so your insurance premium will not shoot up in the subsequent year. You will want to consider a lawsuit against the uninsured driver in this case or if your insurance company agrees they would pay you and you will subrogate the rights against the uninsured driver to them. In the question of underinsured driver it is the same case as above. What you need to consider is that you would be a winner in either situation if an accident happens.
Yes, this is given at the best car insurance rates since the premium for this is not high – it is purely based on the insurance industry claim data for such incidents, which is very low.
For getting cheap auto insurance quotes and best car insurance rates, please refer to my earlier post on the same on this blog. It would be a pleasure to answer any further questions you have once you have dig into and read my posts.

Bryan : I am a college student and I do have a college student auto insurance. I am looking for the best car insurance rates and do go online for teen auto insurance quotes. However, I donot know the basics of auto insurance so I need help.

Response : Bryan, an excellect question and I am going to walk you through finding the best car insurance rates and cheap auto insurance quotes for college student car insurance. The key to this is first to know the basics of the auto insurance. So lets start with the car insurance coverages. I am going to explain the coverages in a very easy way so that you can easily remember and it will be easy for you to decide on the limits that you want to opt for these car insurance coverages :
There are basically the car or auto insurance coverage can be broken down into 4 scenarios. The liablity coverage is an auto insurance coverage which is mandatory in almost all states of USA. Some states have compulsory uninsured car insurance coverage.
1. Liability coverage : Liability insurance issubdivided into Bodily injury liablity and Property insurance liability.
a.Bodily injury liability (BI) coverage covers you if you cause an accident in which someone else is hurt or killed. State laws differ as to how much you are required to carry. Many financial experts recommend carrying at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurance – commonly expressed as “100/300.” Consider what assets you have to protect and what you can afford before you decide to purchae this.
b.Property damage liability (PD) coverage covers you when you damage someone else’s property. Usually it’s someone else’s car, but it could apply to buildings, utility poles, garage doors, and other physical property. State laws determine the minimum you must purchase.
This is the coverage when you cause injury to someone else or damage to the property of someone else.
2. Uninsured/Underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage covers medical and other expenses when you are hit by a driver without adequate auto insurance. Whether this coverage is mandatory or optional depends on your state laws. You can purchase additional coverage to pay for damage to your car if hit by an uninsured motorist, but many people instead just purchase collision and comprehensive.
Now coming to coverages which are not compulsory and are for your own benefit are :
3.Own damage car insurance coverage:
This are for your own car. There are two coverages which you can take for any damage to your car :
a. Collision coverage covers damage to your car if you run into another car, a brick wall, a fire hydrant, or other object. This coverage is not required by law, though your bank may require it if you have an auto loan. You may choose a deductible on this coverage—what you must first pay out-of-pocket for a claim before the insurance kicks in.
b. Comprehensive coverage covers you in case your car is stolen or damaged in ways that don’t involve a collision. Covered risks include hail, fire, theft, flood, earthquake, explosion, falling objects, and encounters with wildlife, such as deer. Comprehensive is optional coverage, though your bank may require it if you have an auto loan. You may choose a deductible on this coverage.
Coverage for your own injury and the passengers of your car :
4.Medical payments coverage (Med Pay, or MPC) acts as primary coverage for medical expenses you and your passengers incur if injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless of fault. States have different laws regarding this coverage.

Once you understand this, the rest of the auto insurance would be very easy to understand. What is it that you are buying is the most important thing to consider for getting the best car insurance rates, especially for college student auto insurance since this is a crucial stage in your life, where money is not to be squandred.
More again.
Thanks.
